If you have ever stood in front of the sponge baskets at our shop in John’s Pass and wondered which one to take home, you are not alone. It is the question we answer most. Here is the short version, then the details.
The short version
- Wool sponge: softest, most lather, lasts longest. The everyday bath and shower sponge.
- Yellow sponge: a little firmer with a light scrub. Great for kids and for anyone who likes a bit of texture.
- Loofah: a plant fiber, not a sea sponge. Firm exfoliation for elbows, feet and rough patches.
- Silk and grass sponges: very fine and small. For the face and for babies.
Wool sea sponge
The wool sponge is the honey-colored, dense sponge most people picture. It absorbs a lot of water, holds lather beautifully with a bar of goat’s milk soap, and feels like a soft cloud on the skin. Because it is denser it also lasts the longest: with basic care, one to two years of daily use. It is the sponge we recommend if you are buying one for the shower and want it to feel luxurious.
Yellow sea sponge
Yellow sponges have larger pores and a slightly firmer feel. They still lather well but give a gentle massage as you wash, which some people prefer. They are lighter in the hand, a bit less expensive, and the size we sell most for children. Expect six months to a year of daily use.
Loofah
A loofah is not an animal at all; it is the dried fiber of a gourd. It is firm and scratchy in the best way, so it is the right choice for exfoliating heels, elbows and knees, and for a body scrub with our sea salt scrub. We sell whole loofahs, loofah pieces and loofah belts. Don’t use a loofah on your face.
Silk and grass sponges
These are the small, fine-textured sponges in the front baskets. They are soft enough for the face and for babies, and they are what estheticians use to remove cleanser or masks. Ours are sold as facial sponges and mini sponges.
Which one should I buy?
- Shower and bath, most people: wool.
- Kids, or you like a light scrub: yellow.
- Exfoliating rough skin: loofah (with a wool or yellow sponge for the rest of you).
- Face or baby: silk or grass.
Whichever you pick, the care is the same: rinse, squeeze, let it dry in the open air, and give it a baking-soda soak every couple of weeks. Our sea sponge care guide has the full routine, and every sponge we sell is in the online store.
